French Polynesia
In support of the local community in Moorea, French Polynesia, one team spent a day working at the Gump Station with Te Pu 'Atiti'a, side by side with locals to plant a medicinal garden, build a greenhouse and create a native plant garden. Work was followed by a traditional Tahitian feast and dance demonstrations, local arts and crafts and outrigger races. Read more about the event here.
Costa Rica
This event focused on refurbishing an elementary school in the Guanacaste Province of Costa Rica. While there, the team cleaned up and resurfaced the playground, painted the inside and outside of most of the school, brought and distributed school supplies to the children, and donated and set up computers to create the school’s first computer lab. This event was covered by the local media and written up in the Tamarindo News.
British Virgin Islands
On Tortola, in the B.V.I’s we teamed with the Ivan Dawson elementary school for a much needed update. We replaced the lighting in the classrooms, cleaned out the library of ruined books after a pipe burst, painted classrooms, restrooms and exterior walls and updated the playground. We had one team member teach the kids how to drum and others who danced and played with the students who were too young to help with the work. Those students who were old enough worked alongside our team to help beautify their campus and make it safer for students. After we left, the local families were so impressed with the improvements that they stepped in to do additional updates to the school.
Barbados
Working with the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association in support of keeping beaches clean for the Hawksbill Turtles and other wildlife, this team picked up trash from Brandon Beach, planted 100 trees along the beach, painted a staircase and stained a boardwalk.
Belize
Working with Sustainable Harvest International, team members went to local farms in George Town, Maya Mopan, Bladen and San Isidro improve the quality of life in those areas. Teams built wood conserving ovens and Justa stoves in several homes. These improvements, in addition to reducing the amount of wood needed for fuel, reduced the amount of toxic gas from smoke inside homes by 95% — an enormous health benefit. We had teams build a water catchment system, several solar latrines, a pig pen, chicken coop and school garden. Spread out within the community, each team had a different experience — each as unforgettable as the local people that they met along the way. Read more about Sustainable Harvest International here.
Curaçao
It is a treat to have the recipients of our efforts be on site during a project. At the Orange School in Willemstad, Curaçao students and parents brought local snacks that they had prepared for the group and passed them out. We painted the school, updated the interior lights, and updated the playground. The day culminated in a tree “painted” with the hand prints of the schools students.
